Trevor Green - An Obituary
Trevor Green
Everyone at Friends’ School was deeply saddened to hear of the death of our former Headmaster, Trevor Green, who died 16 August 2023 after a short period of ill health.
Trevor Green’s association with Friends’ began when he became a pupil at Prospect House in 1945, from where he progressed to the Grammar School. He read Modern History and Political Studies at Trinity College and completed a Diploma in Education at Queen’s University Belfast. His teaching career took him to Mountjoy School in Dublin and Sullivan Upper before he moved to Cumbria to become Headmaster of the Friends’ School in Wigton in 1982. He then moved to be Head of History at Woodford County High School and, in 1989, he returned to Northern Ireland to take up the post of Headmaster of Friends’, following the retirement of Arthur Chapman. He remained in this post until 2001 when he was succeeded by Elizabeth Dickson.
Trevor Green retired to Cumbria with his wife Jean to be closer to family. During this period of his life, he continued to be involved with the Quakers and enjoyed walking in the Lake District.
Trevor Green was held in high regard by everyone at Friends’ and during his tenure he oversaw a number of building projects, including the construction of the new Preparatory Department, the Technology block and the Sports Hall. Pupils at Friends’ during this period, including those in the boarding department, appreciated his kindness and his interest in their lives. Fully involved in the life of the school and a strong advocate of extra-curricular activities, Trevor Green also introduced new subjects into the curriculum and was unfailingly vigorous in his pursuit of high standards.
The Friends’ School community is very grateful to Trevor Green for the enormous contribution he made to the life of the school and for the legacy he helped to create. Our deepest sympathies go to his wife Jean and to the daughters Margaret and Lorna, his grandchildren and the wider family.
