Exploring fairness and equality through Literature This activity seeks to foster an understanding and articulation of the global issue of fairness and equality through shared discussion and activities with a partner school in Sandy Spring, USA. Through the reading of two novels, Storm Clouds and Underground Railway to Canada pupils in both Friends’ School, Sandy Spring and Friends’ School, Lisburn are challenged to think about racism and prejudice and fairness and equality issues in both countries. This activity involves all pupils in Year 9 in Lisburn and Fourth Grade pupils in Sandy Spring. It builds on literature studied in Year 8 (The Boy in the Stripped Pyjamas) and leads in to literature studied in subsequent years (To Kill a Mocking Bird).
